Sheriff

The sheriff is a uniformed officer who is responsible for the safety and security of everyone in the courtroom, including the accused.

The sheriff, or Deputy Sheriff, also transports prisoners from the jail to the court in criminal proceedings, summons the people to be chosen for the jury (if the case is being heard by a judge and jury), looks after the jury once it has been selected, and serves (delivers) documents relating to a civil or criminal court proceeding.

Did You Know?
Sheriffs are responsible for all security matters inside the courthouse. They wear light brown uniforms and will be in the courtroom, the security area, and throughout the building. You can speak to them at any time if you feel unsafe or threatened in any way.
